Periodista i corresponsal a l’Orient Mitjà per a The Independent.

Nascut a County Cork (Irlanda) l’any 1951, és corresponsal a l’Orient Mitjà des del 1979, primer per al Financial Times i, des del 1991, per a The Independent; anteriorment va ser corresponsal a Washington i a Moscou. Des del 2003, és també col·laborador habitual de la London Review of Books.

Darrerament ha rebut reconeixements a la seva tasca periodística, entre d’altres, els premis Orwell de periodisme (2009), el corresponsal a l’estranger de l’any als premis Editorial Intelligence Comment Awards (2013), i el periodista internacional de l’any als British Journalism Awards i el periodista estranger de l’any als The Press Awards britànics (2014).

Aprofitant la seva reputació com a corresponsal a l’Orient Mitjà, ha escrit diversos llibres sobre aquest, en especial sobre la història recent de l’Iraq i sobre el terrorisme gihadista. En podem destacar:

 

• The Jihadis Return: ISIS and the New Sunni Uprising (2014, tornat a editar més endavant com The Rise of Islamic State: Isis and the New Sunni Revolution i traduït al castellà amb el títol Isis. El retorno de la Yihad).
• Muqtada: Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shia revival, and the struggle for Iraq (2008).
• The Occupation: War and Resistance in Iraq (2006).
• Out of the Ashes: The Resurrection of Saddam Hussein (amb Andrew Cockburn, 1999).
• Getting Russia Wrong: The End of Kremlinology (1989).
