The exhibition Pis(o) Pilot(o) will include a space for the project “Public Space and Quality of Life in Ciutat Meridiana: A Study by the Mestre Morera School”

Barcelona, 2 July 2015

The procedures and conclusions of the joint project carried out by the Institut de Govern i Polítiques Públiques (IGOP – Institute of Government and Public Policies) and the Mestre Morera School with assistance from publicspace.org and Education CCCB are to be shown in a space near the exit of the exhibition Pis(o) Pilot(o).

Two weeks after the presentation of the activity-research carried out by twelve-year-old pupils at the Mestre Morera Primary School, a small sample of their work will be exhibited, showing how the participants carried out their research into public space in their neighbourhood, Ciutat Meridiana, and the conclusions they were able to draw from it.

The goal of the study was to give a new view to the crisis consequences in Ciutat Meridiana, a neighborhood that has suffered it harshly. Currently, it is the third quarter with less familiar income of Barcelona and, in the case of Mestre Morera School, 90% of students receive food subsidies and 70% have at least one of the two parents unemployed, whose rate doubles the city average. The study seeks to provide more cultural and educational equality for children living in vulnerable position. A space has been made ready near the exit of Pis(o) Pilot(o) (Barcelona-Medellín), an exhibition on quality of housing which is to be shown at the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona until 25 October. This section will bring together the study with original materials – including the notebooks used for family discussions, the school children’s researcher ID cards and their completed interviews – as well as a video with comments by some of the participants.

The study “Public Space and Quality of Life in Ciutat Meridiana: A Study by the Mestre Morera School” was coordinated by the IGOP as part of the “Neighbourhoods and Crisis” project and it was also supported by publicspace.org and Education CCCB.

The small exhibition will be on show from 2 to 27 July, at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (Montalegre, 5)
