Bronislaw Geremek

(1932-2008). Professor of European Civilisation at the College of Europe (Natolin Campus, Warsaw)

He studied European History at the University of Warsaw and at the Sorbonne.
He has taught at the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Sorbonne, the Collège de France and other European and American universities. A founder-member of the independent Polish union Solidarity, he was personal adviser to its leader Lech Walesa. He was Minister for Foreign Affairs in Walesa’s government and a member of the Lower House of the Polish Parliament (1989 – 2001), of which he was president of the Foreign Affairs Commission. He was a member of several international institutions: European Academy, Académie Universelle des Cultures, Royal Historical Society, PEN Club, Council on Foreign Relations Independent Task Force on Threats to Democracy, International Crisis Group, International UNESCO Scientific Committee, and the European Commission Reflection Group on “The Spiritual Dimension of Europe”.
