Previous state
The project entailed work on a trail of approximately two kilometres leading from the outskirts of the village of Ineia (Cyprus) to the rock formations of Koraki and Alikou, with panoramic views of Lara Bay and the Akamas Natural Park (part of the Natura 2000 Network). The track was partially asphalted and concreted, but was in a ruinous state with collapsed dry stone walls.
Aim of the intervention
The aim of the project was to improve the nature trail and connect its points of historical, archaeological, religious, and environmental interest, and to favour hiking rather than vehicular traffic.
Description
The dry stone walls were rebuilt and new structures were integrated into the landscape, including rest stops, lookouts for enjoying the scenery, and a visitors’ centre providing information about the route and observing nature. The area around its two twelfth-century chapels was flattened and restoration and maintenance work was done on a stone tank dating from colonial times.
The road was relocated to the north to give space to the monuments and rest areas were created, with facilities indicating points of interest. At the point where the track meets a stream, a nature observation platform has been constructed and, at the end of the route, new lookouts offer panoramic views of Lara Bay and Akamas National Park.
Assessment
This restored route with its points of interest, stopping points, rest areas, and visual connections with the landscape, also preserves nature. Aiming to make human intervention and presence subordinate to the landscape, it has increased the number of visitors to the village and made the territory and its history better known.
