Horta Provisional Market: A Two-Stage Project

Barcelona (Spain), 2023

Temporary transformation of a market into a future public space with a wooden structure that will eventually serve as a shaded pergola for the neighbourhood.

This project in Barcelona’s Horta neighbourhood involved the construction of a temporary market for use during the renovation of the historic market building, which had fallen into serious disrepair. The new temporary market is located on a vacant lot at the intersection of the Horta, Carmel and La Clota neighbourhoods. The authority responsible for Barcelona’s public markets requested the construction of a temporary building that would reflect the characteristics of the original market, ensuring a smooth transition for vendors without losing commercial space. The project also involved the creation of naturalised areas around the market to enhance the social space for the neighbourhood. The temporary wooden structure supports the market’s roof and blends into the slope of the land, minimising the impact on the landscape. When the renovation of the original market is complete, the structure will be converted into a pergola, providing shaded areas and a new public space for the community.
