Previous state
Artist Dieter Missiaen created the performance project “Bench Invasion” in Bruges, Belgium, in response to the isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic. After this long period without an audience, he started taking portable benches to public spaces where he listened to the stories of passersby. He learned from the experience that there was a social need for people to spend time together, and to offer and receive attention and kindness.
Aim of the intervention
In presenting the before and after of an action, a new participative way of interacting in public space is demonstrated. The show actively encourages a slowing down and connections among people. Public space is used to bring people together, and for mutual listening, being present, and celebrating life.
Description
Ten people participate in the project. Each one brings a bench and invites passersby to sit and tell their stories, thus creating small meetings that encourage connection and fill public space. At the end of the performance, participants and listeners gather round a communal table made of the benches and celebrate the encounter with conversation, music, and toasting. Finally, the communal table becomes portable benches again, the space is emptied, and everyone leaves.
Assessment
Without great pretensions, the project is based on the idea that grandeur is found in small things, like someone offering a place to sit and people listening to each other. For citizens who volunteered to participate this was a highly gratifying experience as they saw that people easily connect if given time. This creates a positive, constructive atmosphere within a community.
