“Public space is the collective dimension of domestic space”

Interview with Xavier Monteys

[Catalan >English | Duration: 00:06:38]

The architecture critic and Professor of Architectural Projects Xavier Monteys speaks with Shared Spaces about the complementarity of home and street.

Shared Spaces spoke with Xavier Monteys in May 2012, when the architect and architecture critic visited the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) to present his most recent book, El plaer de la ciutat (The Pleasure of the City), which consists of a selection of the articles he regularly publishes in the Spanish daily El País. Professor of Architectural Projects at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB), Monteys approaches the notion of the street from that of the home, a subject close to his heart and a central theme for the Habitar research group he coordinates at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Technical University of Catalonia – UPC). For Monteys, “Public space is the collective dimension of domestic space” and both spheres should be understood from the standpoint of their complementarity.
