On Saturday 18 November the exhibition “Polis: 7 Lessons from the European Prize for Urban Public Space” is to be opened in the Romanian city of Timisoara, the future cultural capital of Europe. The showing of the exhibition is an initiative of the Romanian Order of Architects and it will be open to the public for nine days in the Centrul Multifuncțional Bastion cultural centre.

The Centrul Multifuncțional Bastion is located in the old centre of Timisoara Timisara, which has been declared a historical reserve of national importance. The building is a vestige of thirteenth-century fortifications and also a symbol of historical monuments of the Baroque period. At present, the centre promotes the city’s tourist and cultural activities, is the venue for many artistic events and, in particular, is used for exhibiting works of art and architecture.

On this occasion, the Romanian order of Architects has seen the “Polis” exhibition as an opportunity to initiate a series of debates—involving higher education centres and local authorities from the western part of the country—on the role of architecture in the recovery of and intervention in public spaces.
