José Mateus

Architect. Member of the Prize’s Board of Experts.

After graduating in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon, in 1986, he has been a guest lecturer at the Higher Technical Institute (IST) in Lisbon, and has also taught in the School of Architecture at the International University of Catalonia (ESARQ-UIC) in Barcelona, the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE), and the Lisbon School of Decorative Arts (ESAD). He has given lectures in Portugal, Spain, the United States, Hungary, England, Brazil, Belgium, and Italy, and has been a jury member for architecture awards in the São Paulo Biennale, 2003, the Europan España prize 2007, and the ArquiFad prize 2011.

In 1991, together with Nuno Mateus, he founded ARX Portugal Arquitectos, which has received many prizes, special mentions, and nominations, in both national and international domains. Some of the outstanding ARX projects were shown in the exhibition “Realidade Real” at the Belém Cultural Centre (CCB), Lisbon, in 1993. The studio has also taken part in other exhibitions, for example “Percurso / Útvonal – ARX Portugal” (Budapest, 2000), “Afluencia 0,1” (Fundação de Serralves, 2002), and “Nara Trienal” (1994). José Mateus was president of the Board of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, and was also executive director of the events of the Architecture Triennales in 2007 and 2010. He was president of the Secção Regional Sul da Ordem dos Arquitectos, and vice-president of the management body of the same Regional Section from 2005 to 2007.
