The founding member of Gehl Architects, he promoted the model of the city at the human scale, with people-centred urban design. He sets out to improve the quality of urban life based on the recovery of pedestrianisation and the use of bicycles, with particular emphasis on public space.

Gehl has collaborated on projects for the cities of Copenhagen, London, Melbourne, Sydney, Riga, Amman, New York and Moscow, among others. Honorary member of the Architects’ Institutes of Denmark, England, Scotland, USA and Canada, he has been awarded the Sir Patrick Abercrombie Prize for excellence in town planning by the International Union of Architects, and is doctor honoris causa from the universities of Edinburgh, Halifax, Varna and Toronto.

His works include New City Spaces (Gustavo Gili, 2002, with Lars Gemzøe), Life between Buildings: Using Public Space (Island Press, 2011), Cities for People (Island Press, 2010) and, more recently, How to Study Public Life (Island Press, 2013).

Member of the jury of the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2000.
