James Holston

Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of San Diego, California

He has a Doctorate in Anthropology from Yale University.
He has been a visiting professor at the University of São Paulo and the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris. Notable among his publications are The Modernist City: an Anthropological Critique of Brasília (University of Chicago Press, 1989) and Cities and Citizenship (Duke University Press, 1999). His research work is mainly concerned with the processes of democratisation in Latin America and particularly in Brazil. He has published numerous articles on citizen participation, violence and urban planning in specialist reviews. His book Insurgent Citizenship: Disjunctions of Democracy and Modernity in Brazil, an inquiry into citizen insurgency in the urban peripheries of Brazil, is about to appear.
