Mark J Nieuwenhuijsen

Environmental Epidemiologist

Research professor and a director of the Urban Planning, Environment and Health initiative and the Air Pollution and Urban Environment research programme at ISGlobal Barcelona, Spain. He is a graduate of the University of Wageningen (The Netherlands) and obtained a PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute, after which he completed post-doctoral studies at the University of California, Davis. He then spent some years working at the Imperial College of London before joining CREAL. He is a world-leading expert in environmental exposure assessment, epidemiology and health impact assessment, with a strong focus and interest on healthy urban living. He has edited three books on exposure assessment and environmental epidemiology, another three on urban and transport planning and health (including COVID-19), and one on traffic-related air pollution. He has co-authored 35 book chapters, and over 450 papers published in peer-reviewed journals. In 2018, he was awarded the ISEE John Goldsmith Award for Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Epidemiology. In 2018, 2019 and 2020 he was in the top 1% most-cited scientists in the world.
