Shane O'Toole

Architect. Member of the Prize’s Board of Experts (2012-2024)

After graduating in Architecture from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1979, he led a research group at this university from 1986 to 1991, when he co-founded Group 91 Architects, which headed the infrastructure plan for the regeneration of the central Dublin district of Temple Bar in the 1990s. He has been president of the Architectural Association of Ireland and director of the Irish Architecture Foundation. He also founded DoCoMoMo Ireland, as part of DoCoMoMo International. 

As a curator, he led Ireland’s presentation at the Venice Biennale in 2004 and 2006. He is a member of the International Committee of Architecture Critics (CICA). In 2017 he was elected Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland and in 2018 he was named a Royal Institute of British Architects International Fellow in recognition of his professional career. In 2020 CICA assigned him the Pierre Vago Journalism Award. He is Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at UCD.
