Professor in Urban Design at The Bartlett School of Architecture, where he teaches in the master’s degree curse MArch Urban Design on the different regions and cities of the Mediterranean Basin, he is also a visiting professor at Nottingham Trent University. Moreover, he has also taught in numerous centres and universities in Brazil, China, India, Dubai, the United States, and Europe. Notable among his publications are the book The Temporary City (Routledge, 2012 – co-authored with Lesley Williams), and the report Bishop Review on design policies and architecture on the national scale, which was commissioned by the British Government and the Design Council.

He has spent the greater part of his professional career as an architect in London where he has been planning director for four central districts and has taken part in such large-scale projects as Canary Wharf, the BBC White City Campus, and the transformation of Kings Cross. In 2006 he was appointed as chief architect of the London City Council and, in 2008, as executive director of the London Development Agency. He has also been director of Allies and Morrison since 2011. In 2018 he was named chair of the Place Review Group for the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation project for the development and regeneration of Old Oak and Park Royal.
