Gjergj Bakallbashi

Architect. Member of the Prize’s Board of Experts (2016-2022).

After obtaining a first degree at St. John’s College, Annapolis, he obtained a master’s degree in Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His training has mostly focused on the city and its specificities, and he has participated in the Research of Cities programme, which is led by Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron.

Between 2011 and 2017 he was head of the Department of Urban Planning of the Tirana City Council, where he worked on two general plans for the city as well as a range of urban projects. Prior to that, he was curator of the first Albanian pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2010). Titled Beyond Color, it was also the subject of an article he published in the University of Harvard journal of design, agency, and territory, New Geographies.
