Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent

He has been working since 1995, and especially since the Madrid bombing attacks of 11 March 2004, on the sociology of fear and the cultural processes that have been influential in the construction of an awareness of risk in today’s world. He is author, inter alia, of the books Population and Development (Polity Press, 1997), The Silent War (Pluto Press, 1998), Culture of Fear (revised edition, Continuum Press, 2002), Politics of Fear (Continuum Press, 2005) and Where Have All the Intellectuals Gone?: Confronting 21st Century Philistinism (second edition, Continuum Press, 2006). He is presently working on two related texts: Disasters, Terrorism and the Growth of a Market in Fear and Rumours.
