Professor of Urban Planning at the Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning, University College, London.
He is regarded as one of the main urban planning theorists in the international sphere. He has been Special Adviser on Strategic Planning to the British government (1991 – 1994) and has received honorary doctoral degrees from several universities in England, Sweden and Canada. He is an honorary member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, of the British Academy and of the European Academy. His book Cities and Civilisation (Pantheon, 1998) is a major reference work in the field of urban planning.
