On 25 November,
the Architecture Foundation , one of the six partners in the European Prize for Urban Public Space, organised a public function in order to promote, in the United Kingdom, the sixth award of the Prize. Professionals from different spheres related with public space took part in the event, along with representatives from the civil service, the specialist mass media and academic circles.
After the welcome speech by Sarah Ichioka, director of the Architecture Foundation, Liza Fior, director of the
muf group described the intervention carried out in Barking Town Square, the winning project in the last award of the Prize, after which Judit Carrera, the Prize director, spoke about the 2010 award.
These speakers were followed by a panel discussion of the situation of public space in the United Kingdom, analysing interventions and reflecting on the role of public space and the ways in which urban space really can be created. Participating in the debate were Jurgen Bey, who presented examples of public space interventions carried out by the
Royal College of Art , Mark Brearley, member of the
Design for London project and David Partridge, director of
Argent PLC . Moderating the debate was Sarah Gaventa, director of
CABE Space.
